The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given telecom providers the green light to conduct 5G trial.
MTNL and the three private telcos, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vi, can participate in the 5G trial. With the respective 5G hardware provideres as partnered by the telcos i.e Nokia, Ericsson, etc., every telecom operator will be able to deploy a 5G trial network across different regions of the country.

5G Spectrum Allocation
The government has allocated spectrum for the telecom operators in the 700MHz, 3.5GHz, and 26GHz ranges. 26 GHz means millimeter wave support will be available.
Millimeter-Wave (MM Wave) is an Extremely high-frequency technology. MM Wave is the best application and an essential of 5G technology. This technology offers extremely fast data transfer rates and very low latency. Millimetre waves operate between 24GHz and 100GHz. Telecom operators requested the Department of Transportation to include millimetre wave technology in 5G. As a result of the inclusion of 26GHz, it is clear that India’s 5G infrastructure will support millimetre waves.
The government will also include the millimetre wave in NFAP (National Frequency Allocation Policy) so that operators can use it commercially in India.
What is the timeline for 5G Trial in India?
It will take at least 5 – 6 months for trials. 5G will be commercially available in the first quarter of 2022. Also, keep in mind that 5G will not be launched in its entirety on the first day. The launch is expected to happen in phases. For 5G to be available nationwide, it may take up to 3 years.

Charges for 5G in India?
Currently, it is unclear how much extra the operator will charge for 5G technology. You’ll definitely have to pay more for 5G services. It will be interesting to see how fast 5G will be compared to 4G. You are well aware of the current 4G speed. Currently, 4G speed is pathetic and far below what it is capable of.
We can, however, compare the 5G charges with those of 4G in countries where it has already been launched. In this chart, you can compare the costs of 5G and 4G in the US. Analyzing it, you will observe that 5G costs between 5% and 15% more than 4G.
Does the comparison make sense?
It is impossible to compare the US telecom market to India’s. As a result of Jio’s launch, the internet in India is the cheapest in the world. The Indian scenario can be very different from the US scenario. Currently, Indian telecom companies offer very cheap data rates. In the transition to 5G, the telecom operator may charge more. As compared to the past, the public is now consuming a lot more online content. The public has become addicted to the daily GB data game. If the telecom operators band together, then they can charge a premium for 5G services.
Final thoughts on price
The current Rs 555 plan becomes Rs 640 if we add approximately 15% more cost for 5G services. It is unlikely that the companies will be offering 3-month packages of 5G data for under Rs 650.
