Windows 7 Still Has a Strong Presence in the Market, but Windows 8.1 Struggles to Stay Relevant

Microsoft’s popular operating system, Windows 7, has a fighting chance in the market despite being discontinued in January 2020. However, the same cannot be said for its successor, Windows 8.1, which has seen a significant decline in usage.

According to data from NetMarketShare, as of January 2023, Windows 7 still holds a market share of 14.44%, while Windows 8.1 has a mere 2.68% market share. This is a significant drop from the 7.09% market share that Windows 8.1 held in January 2020.

The continued popularity of Windows 7 can be attributed to its user-friendly interface and the ability to run on older hardware. On the other hand, the unpopularity of Windows 8.1 can be attributed to its lack of support for older hardware and the controversial decision to merge the desktop and mobile operating systems, leading to a confusing user experience.

Microsoft has urged users to upgrade to Windows 10, which has a market share of 77.57%. However, for those who prefer to stick with Windows 7, it is still possible to do so with the help of third-party security updates.
